10:10

We've signed up to 10:10, a mass movement that is signing up people and organisations from every corner of British life for the start of the journey to a low-carbon society. It is the biggest collective effort yet to tackle climate change in the UK.
By signing up to 10:10 we are comitting ourselves to support the national drive to reduce Britain's emissions steeply in 2010. 10:10 is an ambitious project to unite every sector of British Society behind one simple idea: that by working together we can achieve a 10% cut in the UK's carbon emissions in 2010.

What exactly are we aiming to reduce by 10%?

Carbon footprints can be measured in different ways, but for 10:10 purposes, we're talking about four key areas:

1. Grid electricity - this includes all electricity sourced from the national grid.

2. On-site fuel use - for most businesses this means gas for heating and kitchen use, but it also includes other on-site fuels such as coal and heating oil.

3. Road transport - this applies only to vehicles your company owns, not to commuter journeys,
trips taken by taxi, hired vehicles, etc.

4. Air travel- this applies only to company air travel, not to any journeys taken by employees.

How are we going to achieve our target?

Before the start of our 10:10 year, we will ensure we have carried out
accurate meter readings so we can determine our overall reductions in
our grid electricity usage 2010. We will also be requesting accurate records on our usage from our fuel suppliers.

St Margaret's House does not own any vehicles, nor do we participate in air travel as an organisation. Therefore we will not be concerned with reducing our emissions in these areas.

Up until the end of our baseline year (2009) we will be putting together a detailed action plan of how we intend to reach our target. We will also be encouraging staff, customers and suppliers to get involved.Watch this space for our 10:10 action plan.
