Alongside Whitechapel Gallery First Thursdays we will be celebrating the opening night of our latest exhibition, Window Prints by Christopher Wheeler.
Christopher studied painting at Brighton University between 2005 - 2008 and at the Royal Drawing school in 2009. He currently lives and works in London.
Window Prints are a continuation and corruption of the imagery created in previous paintings and digital prints. These works are based on initial studies of the immediate surroundings of the artist, as seen through a window. A small screen into his experience of living in the city. The landscape provides a point of departure, onto which other concerns and observations are explored and realised. Through an evolving re-mixing of materials and process, these reflections are transformed with references to the noise and distractions of an accelerated, compressed and densely populated world.
In the work, digital distortions are transposed into age-old Intaglio techniques, creating a dialogue between the analogue nature of the medium and the contemporary programmed images of modern life. Each etching is unique, made from a process of layering multiple plates with numerous unplanned colour profiles.
