WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE HILARITY ACADEMY IS COMING TO BETHNAL GREEN! YOUNG PEOPLE WILL BE TAUGHT COMEDY SKILLS FOR FREE IN THIS PROGRAMME FUNDED BY CHILDREN IN NEED.
Hilarity Academy will offer young people aged between 7 to 18 in Tower Hamlets free tailored workshops in which they will learn how to make Comedy, and will be showing these skills off at our very own Gallery Cafe, and also in the professional comedy club The Albany in Camden. These sessions will focus on different styles of comedy performance from sketch to stand-up to clowning, and even improvisation!
From 30th September, these sessions will be running every Monday at 3.30pm, and will be led by comedy professionals Alice Devlin and Martin Willis. Alice and Martin run the Hilarity Academy, who specialise in delivering comedy skills to children and teenagers, and have run workshops for organisations including BFI, Jackson’s Lane and Haringey Shed! Alice also runs popular monthly alternative comedy night “Piñata”, is an actor for Punchdrunk, and a founder of Bric a Brac Theatre Company. Martin runs comedy production company Objectively Funny, has a double act Loose Brie and has written and performed for BBC Radio 1, BBC3 and Comic Relief.
Alice said: “We are so thrilled to find a home in St. Margaret’s House, giving us the chance to deliver our workshops and build a hilarious community of young people in Tower Hamlets. As arts subjects and creative approaches continue to be trimmed away from the national curriculum, we want to share our passion for comedy and laughter by making it more accessible for young people. In our workshops, we have witnessed young people growing in confidence, becoming more vocal and having fun while doing it. Let the laughter begin!”
We’re excited to not only be working with Hilarity Academy, but also with Children In Need, who have awarded us a grant of £26,866, supporting us to run the programme for 3 years!
Local Councillor Gabriela Salva-Macallan supported the application and says:“Hilarity Academy will offer young people in Bethnal Green and Tower Hamlets the opportunity to explore new activities and horizons and to develop new friendships and skills. It will be a fantastic addition to youth and cultural provision in our area.”
Sessions will run here at St. Margaret’s House from 3.30pm on Mondays from 30th September 2019. The first session at 3.30pm will be for 7 to 12 year olds and the session at 5pm for 13-18 year olds. All sessions are entirely free due to the generous support of Children In Need!
