Awakening to Spring

  • The Canvas at St. Margaret's House 27 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PJ United Kingdom (map)

"The beautiful spring came, and when nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also." (Harriet Ann Jacobs)

Celebrate the change of seasons and the approaching Spring equinox with this afternoon workshop of gentle movement, yin yoga and yoga nidra. Just as nature enters a cycle of renewal, growth and expansion in spring and the trees begin to blossom again, so does the energy within us. In many ways, this time of year would make for a better "New Year" as the lengthening and warmer days help us to feel more inspired and to commit to new habits. Take this opportunity to shed old unwanted layers from the winter months and make a conscious choice to begin afresh with this new season. During this afternoon workshop, we will spend time slowing down and turning inwards, finding a deep inner stillness in both the body and mind. The yin yoga sequence will focus on the Liver and Gallbladder Meridians, which support the body's natural digestive and detoxification functions, allowing us to better digest things not just physically but also emotionally and mentally, and also allowing us to release that which is no longer serving us as we move into this new season. Yin is a slower, more passive and stationary style of yoga, during which floor-based postures are held for a longer period of time, helping to slowly open and release tight areas of the body, and also helping energy to flow more freely through the body.
With each passing exhalation, we'll invite a sense of softening in order to let go of mental and physical tension. With each inhale, we'll take in warmth and nourishment, embodying an overall sense of vibrancy. The time we spend in the yin yoga postures is also perfect for quiet contemplation and for developing a sense of inner mental calm and clarity. We’ll take the stillness and peace created during these poses into a long, guided relaxation in the form of yoga nidra.

You will end the practice feeling both deeply relaxed, with a sense of inner stillness and peace, and also fully refreshed, with renewed energy to fully embrace the awakening of Spring. The workshop is open to everybody, including those new to yoga.
