Come together to celebrate queer joy and creativity this Pride 2024 with a special edition zine-making workshop, collaboratively led alongside East London’s Queer Writer’s Circle 🏳️🌈
Over the course of a weekend, you will collaboratively create a fresh mini community zine titled "M*LK”. Our workshops will guide you through the process of writing, editing, designing and publishing. You will also make connections with others, and use your creativity to connect with the roots of Pride: to uplift our voices and find power in community.
This workshop will be split into two parts across the following two days:
✴️ Saturday 15th June (4-6pm): Zeeshan Choudhury, founder of the Queer Writer’s Circle, will provide inspiration and prompts around the theme of M*LK, and then guide you to write an original piece. They will then run a group feedback and editing session, providing strategies to refine your final piece for Sunday’s session.
✴️ Sunday 16th June (4-6pm): In continuation, Iona and Tasch from the Cut Out Club will mentor you through the process of zine design, form, and aesthetics, through the classic medium of collage. Working together as a group, you will finalise the zine for production while gaining insight into the ‘behind-the-zines’ process.
Both workshops will take place at the same venue: The Create Place, St Margaret's House.
Once the final zine has been published, you will be notified via email. All attendees will receive a free digital copy to print at home or share with family and friends. Physical copies of the zine will also be made available to purchase at discounted prices from The Common Press.
You do not require any prior experience to participate. Everyone is welcome to attend. We encourage all participants to immerse in the process of creating and building a meaningful mini-community of fellow makers along the way.
In order to keep this collaborative workshop as accessible as possible, we are offering a range of tiered ticket options and kindly ask that you assess your affordability honestly to ensure the intended equality:
✴️ £30 (£15 per workshop) - Skimmed M*lk
✴️ £35 (£17.50 per workshop) - Semi-skimmed M*lk
✴️ £40 (£20 per workshop) - Full Fat M*lk
Your ticket includes all materials and also some creative goodies to take home 👀
❗PLEASE NOTE: Since this event takes place on two separate days, attendees require a separate ticket for each session. If you are unable to make it to one or both of the sessions, please let us know as soon as possible.
Queer Writer’s Circle began in February 2021 at The Common Press bookstore and continues to run there once a month. Serving writers and non-writers alike, it is a space for creativity outside of productivity, and a community-led venue for queer storytelling.
