Pulchritudo Mortifera is a solo exhibition by artist Gleb Skubachevsky, dedicated to the aesthetics of threat and the beauty of the unseen. The project presents a series of graphic portraits of viruses, microbes, and other microscopic life forms — entities more ancient than humans, and often deadly to them.
Using his signature technique — light, almost ornamental drawing — the artist transforms scientific imagery into visually alluring compositions. Inspired by real microscopic scans and medical references, these works exist at the intersection of biology and art, fear and fascination. The dangerous becomes beautiful. The invisible, tangible. The exhibition invites viewers into a space of internal contradiction.
We are simultaneously enchanted and unsettled, drawn into a visual paradox: can we admire that which harms us? Is it possible to recognise beauty in forms that signify death? The exhibition takes its name from the Latin Pulchritudo Mortifera — “Lethal Beauty” — and is accompanied by a line from the Gospel of John: “Spiritus ubi vult spirat” — “The spirit breathes where it will.” For the artist, this phrase serves as a reminder that spirit, life, and nature manifest not only in what we perceive as ‘good’ or ‘useful’. Even the virus — so far removed from human logic — may carry its own truth, its own purpose, its own form of existence. Letting go of moral judgement allows us to perceive, beyond fear, a structure, a rhythm — a breath.
