Love & Loss: Drawing Workshop
A creative space where we invite you to bring a photo and draw someone you have loved and lost.
Former artists in residence at St Margaret's House, Double Negatif (Sophia Alvarez Barnes & Kana Alam) have invited Jake Garber and Christina Watson to host this workshop, where we will be using drawing to explore of feelings of love and loss - this can include those we’re grieving after death and those lost to us in other ways.
The idea for the workshop came from Jake drawing from photos of his dad, who died when he was 12. Through this process of drawing Jake found that his relationship with his dad, which had felt distant for many years, became closer and warmer - more alive even. Christina works with grief tending techniques - supportive and creative practices that help groups to approach their grief and allow it to move. They have put this workshop together and Kana and Sophia will participate alongside you.
How it will work:
All participants are asked to bring a photo of someone they have loved and lost, for whatever reason
Together we will create a supportive space, to share and listen to each other, together with those we’ve lost
We will draw from our own photos after a few warm up exercises.
There will be time to share what we felt in making the drawings if we want to.
We will end with some space to help us transition on from the workshop.
The group will be guided through a supported process of feeling resourced to make contact with something that might be difficult in our lives.
While we hope this workshop will feel supportive and therapeutic in nature, this is not therapy and we are not psychotherapists. We can offer signposting for additional grief support.
Please note that due to the importance of holding space carefully, we will not be admitting anyone after 5.40. Please aim to come 5-10 minutes early to have a drink and say hi before we start.
If you have any questions, please do contact us.
Expertise in drawing is not necessary.
