Recipe For Belonging

  • The Chapel at St. Margaret's House 21 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PL United Kingdom (map)

What helps us feel at home, connected and part of something bigger? An intergenerational group explore the idea of belonging.

This exhibition shares images and poems, intergenerational voices and visions from across Tower Hamlets.

Every month, residents from Tower Hamlets meet with Health and Social care students from Mulberry University Technical College at Pott Street, in Bethnal Green. They talk, reflect and create art inspired by the idea of belonging. Along the way the group have explored personal histories, shared spaces and the stories that connect them.

This intergenerational group is called Creative Mix. Guided by community artists Arji Manuelpillai and Ruan Murphy, they experiment with a range of creative techniques — from printing and modelling to poetry and storytelling. Generations working side by side to share ideas, skills and imagination. Recipe For Belonging showcases the artwork they’ve created over the past six months — a celebration of community, collaboration, and creativity.

Creative Mix is a three and a half year programme created by Magic Me to bring together different generations in the borough through creative activities and discussions. Magic Me is an intergenerational arts charity which has been working in Tower Hamlets since 1989. Magic Me is grateful to Arts Council England for their support, and to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for funding Creative Mix.
