Yin yoga works deeply into our body with passive, longer-held poses for deep stretching and relaxation. It targets the connective tissues of the body – ligaments, joints, bones, the fascia networks. This is in contrast to more active Yang yoga practices such as Vinyasa, which target the muscles.
Yin yoga improves the energy flow, especially to the organs. To be healthy, we need healthy organs and healthy muscles. Because of this, Yin yoga also offers wonderful physical, emotional and mental health benefits.
A typical class will start with a short breathing practice, flow into a series of long-held floor poses, and end with a short meditation. The poses are held for up to five minutes and mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. During the poses, muscles are relaxed and focus is on the breath.
Benefits of Yin:
Increases circulation and improves flexibility
Calms and balances the mind and body
Reduces stress and anxiety
Improves joint mobility
Increases energy and activates the parasympathetic nervous system
