Being Human Festival: Everyone's a Researcher

Improving Health Research Together

Explore a health topic that matters to you in this hands-on creative workshop.

A common misconception about health research is that it is something that only happens in labs. Person-centred health research, focused on lived experience, is vital for ensuring better health outcomes.

This workshop gives you the chance to think about what you would like health research to be – to create better outcomes for you, for your family and for your community – now and in the future.

The workshop will begin with short flash talks introducing some of the current research taking place at Queen Mary. After the talks, you'll be asked how you would like to reimagine everyday health research. You’ll have the chance to talk about what matters to you, your experiences and your ideas, whilst doing some simple drawing, collage or sculpture, to help spark ideas and create a relaxed space.

You’ll be guided throughout by award-winning visual artist, Liz Atkin, renowned for her advocacy around mental health.

Throughout the session, you’ll be invited to share ideas from your conversations to educate health researchers about different understandings of health, and to help them to think about what better research might look like.

Refreshments are provided so we can all enjoy a hot drink and some vegan cake during our conversations.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 6-15 November 2025.
