This workshop is an introduction to the process of Lino Carving used in Printmaking, for people new to the beautiful and immersive material.
An introduction to Lino for people new to the beautiful and immersive material. This is to take place in collaboration with St Margaret's House, a charity committed to nurturing a London community through artistic engagement. This has a symbolic correlation to how the techniques of Print-Making have been used, as one of the oldest art forms, to champion individual artists. Relief Printmaking is a process that is as immediate and accessible today as it was when the first printing press was created by Johannes Gutenberg. The relatively recent induction of Lino as a relief material, proves that Printmaking is still as fertile ground for contemporary artists’ innovation, as ever. I have developed an idiosyncratic approach, specifically with Lino, to Printmaking. I built this from intuitive sketching which I completed rapidly in my sketchbooks. I would go over these free-flow of conscious sketches with brush and ink/biro pen, helping me to bridge my vision from my sketchbooks to my prints which I would translate to the immediacy of image-making found in Lino-Block Carving. Through this, I developed a unique voice in Printmaking, originating in the instinctual sketching and honed by mediated diligence in the carving process and transformed by industrial output in Printmaking.
For my distinct approach and work ethic, I was honoured to be awarded as the 2024 Skinners Company Stephen Gooden Prize Winner for Engraving by the City and Guilds Print Room as well as achieving a First Class Degree in Fine Art BA (Hons). I wish now to impart my insight to a group- curious yet previously unfamiliar to Lino- so that, they can be immersed into the wonders of Lino Carving and further self-exploration into their own creativity. I propose a single-day workshop with all materials to be provided within the session. Throughout this workshop, I will demonstrate my own unique carving method and then begin the group with free-of-flow-consciousness sketching, which they will apply to Linos to carve. This session will be an introduction into my Lino-Carving method, explaining my tools, techniques and methodology. At the end of the session, the works will be taken to be editioned by myself in my Printmaking studio, Kite Press. The edition of one Print will be free for all attendees; professionally embossed on paper with Kite Press’ signature. A discounted block of five editions will be also offered to all attendees as a reduced rate of printing by Kite Press. They will also be provided with a transcript of my session guides as well as a certificate confirming their attendance to the workshop signed by myself, on behalf of Kite Press. All attendees must be over the age of 18 (unless prior arrangement) due to the sharp nature of the carving tools. The workshop is a three-hour block with all materials provided and one printed (via Kite Press) edition per gratis.
