No Saints

  • St. Margaret's House 21 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PL United Kingdom (map)

In their debut duo exhibition, James Lang and Fitzroy Schofield have united to jointly exhibit a curated body of work that examines the themes of spirituality and introspection in their Artistic practice against the backdrop of an ever-changing world.

James Lang is a Fine Artist who uses such contemporary media as wood-dust, acrylic and sand in a fluid, ritualized way of working. His imagery is informed from a fascination in archaic, Christian iconography, early spiritual readings and musings on religious imagery. This bridges the distance in uniting two seemingly contrasting worlds in a unique vocation through an industrial output of comprehensive images. Fitzroy Schofield is a Professional Fine Artist who utilizes both Printmaking and Painting, with a basis in trained draughtsmanship ability, to make work composed of intensely imaginative subject matter. He uses a gestural drawing process with a free-flow of consciousnesseses approach to sketching.

Possible meanings and references in the work are built in depth over time through details. This is aided by his interests in philosophy, literature and spirituality; and even by his own older work and writings. In this way, gestural compositions and powerful imagery formed from his subconscious are layered and detailed with interwoven referential themes and ideas (and even self-referential); with his works fortifying in their meaning across his artistic process. Both Artists have chosen the Chapel of St Margaret’s House as a reflection of their approach to working. One of solitary servitude to routine and discipline, yet engaged and oriented in their practice to the benefit of their community via exhibitions, workshops and simply the choice of making their work. In this way, despite been ‘No Saints’, their practice reflects certain principles of eremitism; such as individual devotion to work focusing on spirituality for the wider benefit of their community. Through the curation of their work, the artists hope that they can help their community foster and benefit from the viewing of their art to greater questions of spirituality and faith.

James Lang is a contemporary painter whose work involves mystic subject matter represented in strong textures and a distinctive approach to material. Having graduated from Camberwell College of Arts (UAL) in 2015, James has worked and exhibited internationally including in Beijing, where he lived for nearly five years. After returning to his home city of London, James immersed himself in an productive output of spiritually evocative works, showing across London exhibitions and maintaining a studio practice in SET Vauxhall.
