The Letter – Experiments in Ink is an exhibition of printmaking by artist Jane O'Sullivan, inspired by the classic film of the same name starring Bette Davis and Gale Sondergaard. Directed by William Wyler in 1940, the film is a superb example of film noir, renowned for its dramatic interplay of light and shadow, its dark themes of deceit and murder, and its striking visual storytelling. These qualities have provided a rich source of inspiration for Jane's latest body of work. Using imagery from the film and experimenting with tone and texture, she has created an evocative collection of prints.
Working across a variety of printmaking techniques, including Tetrapak etching, monotype, monoprint and woodcut, Jane explores imagery drawn from nature: the moon, trees and plant forms. She is also fascinated by the film's two powerful female protagonists, recreating and reimagining their haunting presence through print. Their passionate intentions linger throughout the story, set against the atmospheric backdrop of a sultry colonial Malayan rubber plantation.
About Jane:
Jane is an experimental printmaker based in Bethnal Green. She works primarily in black ink and regularly develops her practice at Shadwell Print Studio. While she has explored Japanese woodcut and traditional etching techniques, she is particularly drawn to the immediacy, spontaneity and unpredictability of monotype and monoprint processes. With a background in community work and youth engagement, she brings a playful, curious and inventive approach to her printmaking practice.
The Letter – Experiments in Ink is Jane's first solo exhibition at St Margaret's House and her second noir-inspired exhibition at the venue. Lovers of classic cinema, storytelling and printmaking alike are invited to enjoy the work and experience the unique atmosphere of the Chapel.
