The Shape of Remembering

  • The Chapel at St. Margaret's House 21 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PL United Kingdom (map)

An exhibition of artworks exploring memory, play and the inner landscapes the mind drifts to in moments of rest.

“Where the Mind Rests” is a solo exhibition by Veronica Rowlands bringing together works that explore memory, early experience, and the quiet spaces the mind returns to in moments of rest. Spanning several years of her practice, the exhibition traces a visual language shaped by play, nostalgia, and emotional connection, inviting viewers into reflective inner landscapes that shift between past and present.

Working primarily through drawing, Rowlands creates detailed, symbolic compositions that draw on natural forms, pattern, and repetition. Her imagery combines elements of landscape, flora, and animal life, forming immersive scenes that feel both familiar and otherworldly. These works act as spaces of pause and reflection, encouraging a slower way of looking and a more intuitive engagement with image and memory.

Alongside more intricate drawings, the exhibition includes a selection of recurring motifs and simpler visual forms that act as fragments of memory. These recognisable images hold emotional resonance, evoking moments of comfort, play, and early experience. Through repetition and variation, they contribute to a broader visual language that connects individual works into a shared emotional terrain.

Rowlands’ practice is informed by an ongoing interest in how sensory experience, pattern, and visual language can reconnect adults with formative experiences of play, comfort, and identity. While rooted in personal reflection, the work invites wider connection, offering open and accessible points of entry for viewers to consider their own memories and inner worlds.

“Where the Mind Rests” offers a space to pause, reflect, and reconnect, presenting a body of work that is both intimate and expansive, grounded in memory yet open to interpretation.
