Autumn workshops; weekend reading
7 August 2026
We reckon August might be the perfect time for you to plan some new activities to take part in this autumn. We have lots of weekly and monthly workshop sessions and we'd love for you to join us - whether it's something totally new or you're returning to an activity you used to love.
We've got Crafting every Monday morning (and once a month on Monday evenings), Woodwork Tuesday afternoons and Beading on Thursday mornings. There's Art every last Wednesday morning of the month, and Repair once a term in September, January and April (last Saturday of the month). As well as much more besides.
Taking part in something creative on a weekly basis can have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing. Our sessions help you connect with others in your local community too, fostering new friendships and a sense of belonging.
Check out our What's on page and read on to find out what's coming up soon, or download a PDF version on the button below.
Why not join the SMH Book Club once a month in our beautiful Anson Room? For 2026, they're reading books by a female author (1900s to 2010s). August is Octavia Butler's Kindred (1979).
A mat-based class designed to help you feel more at ease in your body, blending classical foundations with contemporary approaches to support all bodies and a range of movement experiences.
Join us for a free evening of creating in the Gallery Cafe. If you love to draw and make or just hanging out with new people and doodling while you do, this is a space to come together and be creative.
Did you join our Discover Festival?
The week before last, we celebrated our annual Discover Festival and we couldn't be happier with the incredible turnout. More than 450 people from across the generations joined us to take part in a wide range of activities, including our biggest exhibition yet. We:
brought together young people from different sessions in a party
celebrated with staff, tenants, practitioners and local friends
created Art Cafe collages and mended clothes in the Repair Cafe
introduced people to the Green Spaces of Bethnal Green
showcased the talents of more than 50 visual artists
celebrated Nokshi Katha with an exhibition and workshop day
showcased poetry talent at an Open Mic Night
and topped everything off with the Great Big Queer Garden Party!
Have you read our blog?
We started a blog last year to give you a bit more info about what we do and how and why we do it. We've shared staff member experiences, exciting funding news, suggestions for how to embark on Plastic Free living and a vegan diet, as well as sharing what certain celebration days, weeks and months mean to us. If you've got a quiet ten minutes this weekend, why don't you have a read?
We are delighted that St Margaret's House has become a collection point for the Growing Communities Veg Scheme - climate-friendly fruit and veg boxes for North and East London. The veg scheme offers:
